Is that true that sometimes only the first floor had electricity and upper floors gaslight? Had never heard that and it's an interesting historical tidbit if so.
I made that bit up, but it did have gaslights into the 1920s. Gaslights are fascinating to me. I’m always looking for converted gas fixtures when I’m in an old building. I read in “Haight Ashbury: A History” that hippies who moved into rundown San Francisco Victorians reconnected old gaslights. It’s a dangerous way to light a home but kind of romantic too!
